How to Change the Look of Your SharePoint Site (Themes, Colors & Fonts)

Change your SharePoint site's theme, colors, and fonts in a few clicks—covers modern themes, classic site customization, and tenant-level branding.

To change the look of your SharePoint site, click the Settings gear icon > Change the look > Theme. Select from default themes (Blue, Orange, Red, Purple, Green, Gray, Dark Yellow, Dark Blue) or supplementary themes (Gold, Teal, Indigo, Plum, and others). To customize colors, select a theme then click Customize, choose your main color and accent color, and click Save. For classic SharePoint sites, go to Settings > Change the look > View classic settings to also change fonts, background images, and site layout. Changes apply instantly and can be previewed before saving.

SharePoint site owners can now apply custom styles and colors to sites and thus making it easier to define and manage themes across site collections. Customize the look of your SharePoint site to reflect your brand's value. The options available to a site owner depends on the version of SharePoint being used by him/her..

What Theming Options Are Available for SharePoint Site Collections?

SharePoint administrators can control themes at the site collection level using the SharePoint admin center or PowerShell. Key options include:

  • Custom themes: Organizations can create and upload company-branded themes using the SharePoint Theme Generator tool.
  • Tenant-level control: Global admins can restrict which themes are available to site owners or enable/disable custom themes across the tenant.
  • JSON-based theme definitions: Advanced customizations use JSON to define exact color palettes that align with brand standards.
  • Header and navigation customization: Beyond themes, SharePoint modern sites allow header layout changes (standard, compact, minimal, or extended) via Settings > Change the look > Header.

Tip for intranet deployments: If you are deploying SharePoint as an enterprise intranet (for example, with Dock 365's SharePoint Intranet Portal), consistent theming across all site collections strengthens brand identity and improves user adoption.

Frequently asked questions

  • Can I create a custom branded theme in SharePoint?

Yes. Use the SharePoint Theme Generator tool to build a JSON color palette matching your brand standards. Once generated, the JSON can be uploaded by a Global Administrator or SharePoint Administrator via PowerShell using the Add-SPOTheme command. Once uploaded, the theme becomes available for site owners to select from the Change the Look > Theme menu across the tenant.

  • How do I apply a theme to all sites in my SharePoint tenant?

SharePoint does not natively apply a theme to all existing sites at once from the admin center UI. To apply a theme tenant-wide, a SharePoint administrator can use PowerShell (Set-SPOSite with -Theme parameter) or a SharePoint Framework provisioning solution to iterate across all site collections and apply the theme programmatically. For new sites, configure site templates in the SharePoint admin center to include your custom theme by default.

  • Does changing a SharePoint theme affect all pages on the site?

Yes. When you apply or change a theme from Settings > Change the look > Theme, the change applies to all pages within that site collection immediately — including the home page, document library pages, list pages, and SharePoint modern pages. The change does not affect subsites unless you navigate to each subsite and apply the theme separately. Communication sites and team sites manage themes independently.

  • What is the difference between a theme and a site design in SharePoint?

A theme controls visual appearance — colors, fonts, and backgrounds. A site design is a broader configuration package that can apply themes but also configures site structure, navigation, content types, lists, and web parts when a new site is created. Site designs use site scripts (JSON-based instructions) applied at site creation via the SharePoint admin center or PowerShell. Themes focus only on visual branding; site designs configure both appearance and functionality.

  • Can I change the font in SharePoint Online modern sites?

Font customization in SharePoint Online modern sites is limited compared to classic sites. Classic SharePoint allows font changes via Settings > Change the look > Fonts. Modern SharePoint sites use fonts tied to the theme and SharePoint Framework — fonts cannot be changed from the Change the look panel in the modern experience. To use custom fonts on modern SharePoint sites, you need a custom SharePoint Framework (SPFx) solution or a custom theme that references custom web fonts via JSON theme definitions.
